Chief Dream Director (Chicago, DC, and San Francisco)

The Future Project is looking for Chief Dream Directors – seasoned visionaries, leaders, coaches, and advocates – to lead our growing teams of Dream Directors in Chicago, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.


The Future Project
The Future Project is building a movement to transform schools across the country into places that unlock the passion and purpose of everyone inside them.  For the past five years, we have accomplished this by inventing a new role in the American high school: the Dream Director.  Dream Directors are coaches, social entrepreneurs, and organizers who work to inspire passion in every young person within the school, specifically by coaching students to launch transformative Future Projects that incite culture change and positive student achievement.  

Over five years, The Future Project has become one of the fastest growing organizations within the American education sector, raising over $15m in capital and reaching over 30,000 young people across eleven American cities.

A Chief Dream Director works to:

  • Train, equip, coach, develop and manage each Dream Director to be highly effective in generating our desired outcomes with the young people we serve in our schools.
  • Coach Dream Directors to fully realize their own potential, and the potential of others, including students, faculty, school leadership, and other actors that might influence the students we serve.
  • Support and facilitate the participation of Dream Directors in the continuous innovation process, including product pilots, and learning engagement with our learning and innovation team.
  • Design and lead major trainings, events, retreats, and milestones critical to student and citywide engagement, performance management, and team culture.
  • Provide support, guidance and management of how best to leverage volunteers, part-time contractors or employees, and community partners to best serve our students and create greater impact.
  • Ensure the effective administration and operation of our program in each region, city, and school, including MOU agreements, enforcement of HR policies, student releases, research data agreements and collection, expense reporting, student intern programs, budget, and project management.
  • Provide the conditions and leadership to foster a sense and experience of Future Project community in each city/region, so that every person feels meaningfully connected to our work on the ground, to each other, and to the organization as a whole.

The Chicago and San Francisco Chief's work will include:

  • Sourcing and engaging local funders and investors to support the growth of our local operations
  • In collaboration with our growth and expansion team, build and cultivate a network of mission-aligned Principals interested in bringing The Future Project into their schools

The D.C. Chief's work will include:

  • Support and facilitate the participation of Dream Directors in the continuous innovation process, including the facilitation of insight gathering, contribution to product development sprints, and assisting in the end-to-end program and product experimentation and learning processes at The Future Project.
  • ​Provide leadership and management of specific pilot programs as identified by the National innovation team, ensuring that Dream Directors understand pilot objectives, the pilot program, products or training, and actively participate in the learning and insights gathering that flow from the pilot.
  • Troubleshoot and address challenges in pilots as they arise to ensure on overall positive experience of both students and school leadership.
  • Actively seek, identify, and raise opportunities for further program, product or training improvement.
  • Embrace opportunities for experimentation and learning that may lead to innovation that can’t be seen from afar, or known from historical data.

What's true about our Chiefs?

The Chief we are looking for has substantial leadership experience and, very likely, has gained recognition for their service, in addition to more than seven years of experience or an ability to explain how they've earned equivalent experience in less time. (Note: some of our Chiefs have had upwards of 20 years of experience leading teams!)

What can I expect from the process?

We have a three-step process which includes the application, mission, and adventure.

  • We are accepting applications through Friday, August 25.  
  • Top applicants will be interviewed between September 4-15.  
  • Top candidates from these interviews will have a final interview between September 15-22.
  • Chiefs will likely start on our team on Monday, October 2.
